Transport

Focusing on rail, road, haulage, air and shipping, we work at the cutting edge of developments in this sector. We regularly advise major rail transport operators on operating issues in the light of complex franchise agreements and other legislation flowing throughout the rail industry. We also advise airport operators on the rapid growth of air passenger travel; shipping companies on restructuring to remain commercially competitive. We also provide transport law, competition and employment advice to plc companies who require logistics services.

In addition, team members act for many motor manufacturers and dealerships, advising on block exemption compliant contractual arrangements, including representing industry players before the European Commission.

We have provided transport clients with employment law advice for over 30 years. We specialise in advising on issues relating to trade union and industrial relations law, including collective bargaining and the implications of information and consultation requirements, Works Councils, restructurings and transfers of undertakings.

We have extensive construction and planning experience, acting for various transport clients in the smooth running of major projects. This includes advising Bristol International Airport on all its planning and environmental issues, and acting for various train operating companies, bus operators and Birmingham Wolverhampton Airport on planning, CPO and regulatory work.

Team members also advise on health and safety law, prosecutions, occupational health law, insurance matters and personal injury claims.

Our clients benefit from the on-hand industry expertise of our corporate, commercial, employment, property, planning, environmental and dispute resolution teams. Our experience is extensive and our sector knowledge is well recognised; we are members of The Parliamentary Advisory Council for Transport Safety.

Our enthusiasm, inside knowledge and technical expertise make us an ideal partner in the search for solutions in the modern transport industry.

Examples of our recent experience include:
  • acting for National Express Group on the formation of the Greater Anglia rail passenger franchise, advising on the statutory and other transfers of the three train businesses forming the new franchise
  • drafting and negotiating a replacement into-plane service provision contract at Bristol International Airport with BP and Kuwait Petroleum and advising on strategic planning issues, including representations to the Government on night noise quotas, and handling appeals on airport car parking issues.
  • advising P&O Ferries on two major redundancy programmes, both with cross-border elements, which included TUPE and outsourcing issues.
