Defence clients are clients of choice for Osborne Clarke. We support their objectives with energy and commitment, whether they are executive agencies or trading funds within the Ministry of Defence, companies emerging through public private partnerships or private-sector defence contractors.

We advise our defence clients on major procurement and contractual projects. Typically, we prepare the entire contractual documentation for a project and give compliance advice on a wide range of related issues. We also advise routinely on issues of public accountability and are frequently asked to comment on the political and strategic implications of a proposed course of action. In relation to trading funds, our advice extends to joint ventures, corporate structures and issues arising from privatisation.

Our defence team is led by experienced project managers who are supported by specialists in banking, construction, commercial, employment, environmental, planning, property and tax law. Their approach, usually in a partnering relationship with the defence client, is direct, commercial and totally solutions focused. Our problem solving techniques range from flexibly negotiated compromise (typically on legal problems) to a firm stand (for example on a security issue).

Our commitment, in every defence project, is to deliver lasting practical solutions to a standard of excellence and within a framework of full public accountability.

We have a track record of delivering complex defence projects to the client’s specification and within the client’s time scale.

Examples of our recent experience include:
  • advising the Defence Logistics Organisation on an innovative procurement system for consumables and similar items for general and common-user stores (contract value approximately £1 billion)
  • advising QinetiQ Limited on a wide range of site rationalisation projects (project values currently total approximately £150 million)
  • advising the Met Office on a tender for the provision of a foreign weather forecasting system (project value £64 million) including the implications of an agency agreement and project structure and finance.
